VAMC Philadelphia, Research Building 21 Electrical Upgrade & Sprinkler System
The scope of work for Research Building 21 consists of design to upgrade building emergency power systems, and complete sprinklering of the building. This is a 51,000 SF, five-story building with basement and mechanical penthouse.
The electrical design for upgrading the building emergency power systems include bringing in two new feeders from the existing emergency generating plant into bracket in Building No. 16. One feeder at 800 amps, 208/120-volt service, the other at 800 amp 480 volt/3 phase service. In Building 21, two 800 amp automatic transfer switches, and new panelboards on each floor were provided to accommodate present and future needs.
Design of the building sprinkler system consisted of calculating required pressures and flow rates to verify adequacy of the existing central fire pump. The design indicates the general routing of sprinkler mains, locations of flow and tamper switches, as well as, ceiling construction of each room. Performance specifications were complied to indicate governing codes, authorized jurisdiction and requirements of the installing contractors.
