Cornell University, James A. Baker Institute for Animal Health

Henry Adams provided MEP engineering design for a 40,000 SF, 3-story addition and 7,800 SF renovation of the Microbiology Wing for Cornell University’s James A. Baker Institute of Animal Health.

The James A. Baker Institute for Animal Health is one of the oldest research centers dedicated to advancing veterinary medicine through research.

The new 40,000 SF addition expands the laboratory and animal holding functions, and consists of two upper levels of laboratory space, a 100-seat lecture hall, and lower level kennels. The new addition includes wet laboratories, tissue culture labs, centrifuge rooms, cell biology labs, and molecular biology rooms. The kennel level houses four kennel rooms, whelping room, isolation kennel, treatment and exam rooms, surgery space, feed storage and mechanical and electrical rooms. The addition was designed to meet the critical demands of modern veterinary research and to accommodate the continued growth of Cornell University’s and Baker Institute’s highly successful research programs.

The renovation of the Microbiology Wing compliments the newly constructed three-story laboratory building and theater. The project includes renovation of three laboratories and multiple office spaces covering approximately 7,800 SF. Each laboratory includes a single fume hood with independent, pneumatic supply and exhaust control valves. A custom roof-top variable air volume air handling unit serves the Microbiology Wing with cooling provided from the existing chilled water system. Two Strobic Air fume exhaust fans were installed, with one operating as standby.  An existing boiler was used to provide hot water for space reheat coils and preheat at the roof-top air handling unit. A heat exchanger was installed to provide a glycol hot water system for the preheat coil. The renovation also included the addition of complete sprinkler coverage of the Wing.
