Vollmer Center at Cylburn Aboretum

Henry Adams provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, communication, and fire protection design services for the new 10,104 SF Orientation and Education Center. The new building consists of lobby areas, exhibit space, 250-person auditorium, small catering kitchen, offices, public toilets, elevator, storage, mechanical space, truck loading area, and provisions for a future gift shop and café. The auditorium space will be used for lectures, films and concerts and can be divided into two meeting rooms. It will also be used to host annual plant sales and shows. The new building features a lobby that opens directly out onto a terrace, which leads to the arboretum. A woodland amphitheatre connects the upper lobby to the arboretum below, and to terraces at both levels.  The design incorporates many sustainable features, including the use of extensive green roofs over half of the building, composting toilets, natural ventilation, geo-thermal heating and cooling, and sustainable materials where appropriate.
