Ashburn Recreation Center
Loudoun County
Henry Adams provided the MEP engineering design for the new $87M, two-story, 120,000 SF recreation and community center. The facility includes a recreational pool with slides, as well as a 10-lane, 50-meter competition pool with both spectator and team seating. Other notable spaces are a community center, and a fitness center with weight training space. The project was designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
A major challenge faced electrically was with the lighting design. Lighting fixtures could not be positioned over the pool for maintenance purposes. This led the Henry Adams team to research lighting fixtures and to run calculations to “throw” light across the pool for adequate illumination of the pool deck and surface of the water. These fixtures were also coordinated for aesthetic purposes with the architects and interior designers.
But one of the greater challenges was the extraction of chloramine from the natatorium. The Owners have four other such facilities in the County and all experience the same problem with increased levels of chloramine. This affects their operations and profit. Henry Adams worked closely with the design team, most especially with the Owners, to develop a design that addresses the Owners’ concerns. While the project has not been built yet, numerous analyses and visits to the out-of-state facilities with similar design approaches has given the Owners confidence that Henry Adams’ design approach will ultimately give them a superior facility.
Ashburn Recreation Center included a significant amount of utility work to bring Medium Voltage Primary Wiring into the newly developed site, and also included a PV solar connection tie in point.
