Alexandria City Public Schools held a small private ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday to celebrate the official opening of Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School. This marks an important contribution to ACPS, being the first new school to open since 2000. The event was held privately for members of Ferdinand T. Day’s family, who were invited to cut the ribbon and view the dedication wall about Ferdinand T. Day’s life and involvement with civil rights in the City of Alexandria. The event acknowledges the completion of the majority of the construction and the opening of the school on time.

The school includes an outdoor play space with a basketball court, located on the roof of the adjacent parking garage, with a raised walkway that allows easy student access. The official public dedication ceremony will take place on October 18th once students have had the chance to settle into the new school, which will involve student performances and musical celebrations.

Henry Adams provided the initial assessment and feasibility study for the vacant office building that was transformed into the new Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School.
