Design has officially commenced on the new 60,000 square foot athletic center at American University in Washington, DC. The facility will host wrestling and volleyball for NCAA events as well as house an additional basketball facility allowing the University to schedule simultaneous events.  The $85 million project also includes a 20,000 SF wellness addition as well as renovations within the 108,000 SF Bender Arena. The design team is currently exploring net-zero opportunities.

A total of $4.5M in donations were made to the new athletic center which included $3M from the Bender Foundation and $1.5M from university trustee board member Stephanie Bennett-Smith. The CAP Center will provide competitive opportunities for students and create a heightened sense of collegiate spirit. The state-of-the-art facility will attract many new students to the University while also creating a new student activity hub.
