Charlotte Hall Veterans Home Phases III & IV

Henry Adams provided mechanical and electrical engineering design for a 60,800 SF, 126-bed addition to existing comprehensive care nursing home, and one-story, 13,200 SF activity building housing multipurpose room, conference and training center, offices, kitchen, cafeteria and dining room.  All new mechanical/electrical systems were provided, including HVAC, electrical power, lighting, fire protection/life safety systems, communication, plumbing and piping.  The HVAC system included water source heat pumps in each residential room.  A central boiler, a cooling tower, and heat exchanger controlled the closed loop temperature.  Other areas, such as utility rooms and laundries, and lounges are conditioned by ducted, central packaged heat pump air conditioning units.  The power systems included a new service from the local utility and a new 750 kW emergency generator.  A nurse call system, and an intercom system were also designed. Fire protection system includes total sprinkler system and alarm system integrated into the existing fire alarm systems. The alarm system is comprised of addressable automatic and manual devices, audible and visual appliances, elevator recall, sprinklers and security interfaces.

Phase III design, also done by Henry Adams, made utilities available for future expansion for the second addition.
