Henry Adams provided mechanical and electrical engineering for the addition and renovation to Building F on the Community College of Baltimore County’s Catonsville campus to create a new 99,700 SF STEM building (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics).

The project involved a series of programming meetings to evaluate and verify the existing program, including production of various trial space layouts.  The new complex features lecture halls, offices and laboratories to support education in the mathematics and science disciplines, including 10,900 SF of labs dedicated to the biological sciences and 9,000 SF dedicated to the physical sciences and lab prep areas.

The new STEM building is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification. The project design was totally completed using the BIM Revit platform.

Basic infrastructure work included relocation and modifications of conflicting utilities; the design of new utilities; the addition of boiler/chiller/tower/pumping capacity to the Campus Central Utility Plant; demolition of obsolete cooling equipment at the project site; and site electric improvements. The work required detailed field survey for interconnections of mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, building automation, electrical power, lighting, and life safety systems with connecting buildings for a complete and coordinated project. The new MEP design was coordinated with the architect, lab planners, and remaining team members to support the complete fit-out of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics building.

The building includes a new digitally addressable lighting system which exceeds LEED expectations. The lighting was digitally modeled using ElumTools and AGI32 software. The project includes daylight harvesting and other control methods to minimize energy consumption. The building electric lighting/power distribution analysis included load reassignment to balance loads among panels. The ADA Fire alarm upgrades and zone separation work involved adjacent buildings.  Specialty design items covered by Henry Adams include: security (intrusion alarms) and closed circuit TV systems and the provision of card access system to all lab areas.
