Under an on-call contract as the prime consultant, Henry Adams performed a building assessment of the 125,000 SF office building and neighboring parking garage. The assessment assisted ACPS in deciding to purchase the building to convert it into a secondary school- the Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School.

 

The mechanical portion consisted of air handling units, rooftop units, filters, unit heaters, boilers, chillers and/or cooling towers, heat wheels and heat exchangers, major pumps and fans, energy management system, ventilation system, and identifies equipment generating noise issues due to failing motors, bearings, etc.

 

The plumbing portion consisted of incoming water service, observable distribution piping, identifying obvious leaks, odors, discolorations of domestic water, poor operation, and checks the most recent certification of the domestic water, and poor operation. 

 

The electrical portion consisted of incoming electrical service equipment, power distribution (panel boards and transformers), emergency generator, transfer system, lighting fixtures and controls, and lighting protection system.

 

Ultimately, ACPS hired Henry Adams’ team again to investigate further options for the building through a separate feasibility task order. After the completion of the study, ACPS decided upon converting the building into a new school and procured the renovation through as a separate design/build contract. ACPS retained Henry Adams as a consultant during the procurement and evaluation process.

 

The Alexandria City School Board selected Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School as the name of the new science, engineering, technology and math (STEM) focused school on the West End.
