Alexandria City Public Schools held a public dedication of the new elementary school to a large crowd. This included a short program involving all 450 students. Notable attendees included Ferdinand T. Day’s daughter – Gwen Day-Fuller, City Council members, Congressman Don Beyer, and Deborah S. Delisle – the Executive Director and CEO of ASCD and former US Assistant Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education under President Barack Obama.

The previous grand opening and ribbon cutting was a private event for family and close personal friends of Ferdinand T. Day’s. During that event, guests were invited to cut the ribbon and view the dedication wall about Ferdinand T. Day’s life and involvement with civil rights in the City of Alexandria.

The new school includes an outdoor play space with a basketball court, located on the roof of the adjacent parking garage, with a raised walkway that allows easy student access.

Henry Adams provided the initial assessment and feasibility study for the vacant office building that was transformed into the new Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School.
